| Seminar. Japan’s courtly culture spawned some of the greatest cultural achievements the world has ever known. Based on the Tale of Genji, a tenth-century novel of romance and intrigue, students attempt to reconstruct the complex world of courtly culture in Japan, where marriages were open and easy, even though social mobility was not; and where the greatest elegance, and most base violence, existed in tandem.
