| Examines several key elements of contemporary society, exploring how Chinese society has changed in recent years and how social institutions such as family, education, and community have been a part of the recent economic and social restructuring. Pays parcticular attention to issues of work, family, gender, and migration. Part of a two-course sequence including Asian Studies 262. (Same as Sociology 261.) | |

| Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. Because this course is part of a two-course sequence that includes a five-week trip to Asia, students are selected on the basis of a short application to be submitted in the spring. Preference is given to sophomores. | |
